What marketing attribution tells you
A buyer may encounter an AI answer, read an article, return through a branded search, and enquire weeks later. Attribution gives a team a defined way to distribute credit among the interactions it can observe. It helps organize reporting and channel comparisons.
The result depends on the model, data, identity matching, and reporting window. Attribution describes recorded interactions under those assumptions. It does not capture every conversation, offline influence, or untracked encounter.
Models and measurement scope
A last-touch approach credits the final eligible interaction; other approaches distribute credit across several interactions. Different models can describe the same conversion differently. State the method and window before comparing channels or periods.
In B2B, distinguish person-level conversions from account-level buying activity. Several stakeholders can research the same purchase through different channels. A form submission, a qualified lead, an opportunity, and closed revenue are also different outcomes.
A B2B example
In an illustrative example, a software buyer first discovers a provider through an article and later returns through a branded search to request a demo. A last-touch report can emphasize the return visit. A broader review considers the recorded earlier interaction and sales feedback without assuming it captured the entire decision.
Attribution for SEO and AI search
Track identifiable referrals and the landing pages they reach. Some AI encounters generate no website visit, and people can return through another channel. A missing AI referral does not prove that no AI answer influenced the buyer; it also does not justify assigning unattributed revenue to AI.
Combine analytics with CRM progression and optional buyer-reported discovery information. Use experiments where practical to test incremental impact. Attribution and causal evidence answer different questions: assigned credit alone does not establish what would have happened without an activity.
Frequently asked questions
Which attribution model is always correct?
No model observes the entire journey perfectly. Choose a method suited to the question and explain its limits.
Can attribution prove a campaign caused revenue?
Not by itself. It assigns credit from observed data; testing causal impact requires additional evidence and an appropriate evaluation design.
